Passionate and tenacious, Spiraling have long been stalwart fixtures on the New Jersey club scene, and they've wowed audiences coast to coast, sharing stages with some true musical titans—OK Go, Violent Femmes, Hot Hot Heat and Rooney, to name just a few. No strangers to the road, Spiraling have performed at the country's leading venues, including Irving Plaza and The Bowery Ballroom in New York, Middle East in Boston, 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., Stubbs in Austin, TX and The Roxy Theater in Atlanta, GA.
...a band that could simultaneously be energetic and cerebral
Their first two CDs, Transmitter and Challenging Stage, established them as a band that could simultaneously be energetic and cerebral. Tom Brislin proved himself a keyboard virtuoso—he even did a stint on tour with Meat Loaf and Yes—but Spiraling is far from a one man show. The rhythm section of Bob Hart and Paul Wells consistently provide the thunderous underpinnings for Brislin's dazzling feats of keyboard magic. Guitarist Marty O'Kane is no small town instrumentalist, either, and he provides an ideal sonic foil for Brislin. The years of hard work, relentless touring, musical growth, and daring experimentation have all come together in the latest recording from Spiraling, Time Travel Made Easy. Unafraid to take musical chances, this quartet is poised for big things in 2008.
They've only just begun getting the national exposure they deserve, but to those of us who live in the New Jersey area, Spiraling are already rock stars. In the two and a half years since the release of their last CD Challenging Stage, they've become one of the biggest indie bands in the state—regularly packing legendary clubs such as Maxwell's and the Stone Pony with devoted fans. And they've done it with one of the most distinctive radio-friendly sounds on the East Coast: an amalgam of punk, prog, and synth-pop that has left critics and fans searching for adjectives adequate enough to describe it.
Spiraling are ready and willing to question otherwise established doctrines and assumptions, both musically and lyrically. That's what their new record, Time Travel Made Easy, is all about. They certainly have learned from those who have gone before, but have never shied away from being musically groundbreaking every step of the way! Musical innovators from their inception in 2002, Spiraling have outdone themselves this time around, giving us an intriguing journey to ponder, one full of twists, turns, and plenty of pop genius to boot. Pet Sounds era youthful exuberance and The Postal Service's sonic imagery meshes exquisitely with epic rock masterpieces.
